At 5:00 a.m. on September 16 (local time), the tropical depression east of Aurora developed into tropical depression Gener, according to the announcement of the Philippine meteorological agency.
At 7:00 a.m. this morning (September 16), the center of the tropical depression was determined to be 315 km northeast of Casiguran, Aurora with the strongest wind reaching 45 km/h and gusts up to 55 km/h.
A level 1 storm warning has been issued for 11 provinces in the eastern Luzon region.
Gener is expected to move mainly westward, passing over Northern Luzon on September 17 and intensifying into a tropical storm before leaving the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on September 18.
Thus, this low pressure will almost certainly enter the East Sea.
In addition, the tropical depression outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) strengthened into tropical storm Pulasan near the US territory of Guam in the early morning of September 16 (local time).
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a bulletin at 5 a.m. on September 16 (local time) that tropical storm Pulasan was located 2,215 kilometers southeast of Luzon, moving northeast at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
The storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h and gusts of up to 80 km/h. Pulasan is the international name contributed by Malaysia, referring to a type of fruit.
“Pulasan is expected to maintain tropical storm intensity throughout the forecast period. Further strengthening cannot be ruled out as the storm is still over the Atlantic Ocean,” PAGASA said.
Pulasan is forecast to enter PAR around the evening of September 17 and exit PAR around the morning of September 18. However, PAGASA stressed that this timing may change depending on the storm’s activity.
As Pulasan enters the PAR, its path could be similar to that of Tropical Storm Ferdie (Bebinca) – a storm that only lingered in the PAR for a few hours, did not approach the Philippine mainland but intensified the southwest monsoon.
The southwest monsoon enhanced by Gener and Pulasan will cause strong to very strong winds over coastal areas of the Philippines, including western and southern parts of Southern Luzon, the coasts of Visayas, and the western, northern, and eastern coasts of Mindanao.
PAGASA advises people to be vigilant against flash floods and landslides.
