As of 4:45 p.m. ET on September 4, four people were killed and nine others were injured in a shooting Wednesday morning at Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The 14-year-old suspect is alive and in custody, the GBI said.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith confirmed at a brief press conference that multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the school after receiving reports of a shooter at 10:30 a.m. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and GBI are investigating the incident.
Law enforcement is expected to provide an update at 4:30 p.m. FOX 5 Atlanta will broadcast the news conference live.
The school was cleared by 11:30 a.m., and students were released to their families. Winder-Barrow High School was also placed on temporary lockdown as a precaution, although no threat was found.
The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting by homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall. His administration is coordinating with federal, state and local officials.
The White House also said Vice President Kamala Harris was briefed on the shooting before she left Joint Base Andrews. Harris’ campaign said the vice president was expected to address the shooting at the start of her remarks at a brewery in New Hampshire.
About 1,900 students attend the school, one of two high schools in the Barrow County Public School System, according to US News & World Report. The school is located about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.
