PHNOM PENH, 29 July 2024 — The Ministry of Women’s Affairs announced today that a Cambodian delegation led by State Secretary and Chairperson of the ASEAN Women’s Peace and Security Council, Kun Solita, participated in the inaugural Southeast Asian Women Peace Ambassadors Forum. The historic event was held in tandem with the annual ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which will be held from 27-29 July 2024 in Vientiane, Laos.
The forum brought together 40 high-ranking female ministers and ambassadors from across Southeast Asia to highlight the importance of women’s role in diplomatic and peacekeeping activities in the region. The event aimed to establish foundational relationships among female ambassadors in Southeast Asia, foster cooperation and explore opportunities for joint initiatives to address global challenges.
The main objectives of the Forum included strengthening preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution strategies within ASEAN and advancing the implementation of national and regional Women, Peace and Security (WPS) commitments. Discussions also focused on challenges and effective approaches to mediation and negotiation in the WPS context.
“Our participation in this forum marks an important milestone for Southeast Asia and demonstrates the growing engagement of women in leading peace and security efforts,” said Solita. “I am honoured to represent Cambodia in this important discussion that aims to bring lasting peace and security to the region.”
The success of this forum has set the stage for future cooperation among ASEAN women leaders, aiming to strengthen the role of women leaders in international diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts.
