After the inspection results came out, knowing that her child had gone from passing to failing and might have to study far away from home, Ms. O. in Tien Hai district, Thai Binh was disappointed and worried.
The 2024 grade 10 entrance exam score error in Thai Binh has been causing a stir in public opinion for many days. After the inspection conclusion and official score announcement, 252 candidates went from failing to passing, of which 15 candidates passed Thai Binh Specialized High School, 258 passed but failed.
As early as 9am yesterday, August 20, when the results of the exam after inspection appeared on the screen confirming that her son had failed the exam, Ms. LTO (40 years old, residing in Dong Hoang commune, Tien Hai district, Thai Binh) was very disappointed. Just about a month ago, her family was overjoyed to receive the news that her son had passed the entrance exam to a public school near their home.
According to Ms. O., this year, the admission score for Dong Tien Hai High School is 26.9 points. Her son got 28.9 points in the first exam, passing his first choice to enter the school, and being placed in class 10A8. However, at 9:00 a.m. on August 20, the exam results after inspection showed that her son only got 23 points, causing her son to go from a candidate who had 2 points more than enough to pass to now having more than 3 points less than enough to pass.
“The school has divided classes, organized parent-teacher meetings, distributed textbooks to students, and collected donations for socialization. Students have come to class to meet their friends and homeroom teachers, and parents have created a Zalo group for easy communication, but…
The homeroom teacher just called to ask for the account number to transfer the money back, but I don’t care anymore. If only the students had known they failed when the results were announced, the sadness would only last a few days and then subside, but now the sadness has brought with it so many things that I can’t express.” Ms. O said sadly.
If she cannot get her child into a public school near her home, her only chance is to send her child to Hoang Van Thai public school.
“My family always expected our child to study at Dong Tien Hai school so that he would be close to home, so that we could have conditions to manage him. He studied at Hoang Van Thai school which is very far from home, my husband and I are also busy with work, we do not have time to pay close attention to our child.“, Ms. O. wondered.
Then she felt sad again when thinking about the past time, the family was so happy that they invited relatives and neighbors to organize a party to celebrate her child’s passing the exam.
We would like to, through the press agencies, send our deep apologies to the students, parents and people in the province who have been affected by the errors in organizing the above exam by the Department of Education and Training.
Deputy Director of Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh province Dang Xuan Phong
“My husband and I have been arguing since morning. I don’t dare to open my phone to respond to everyone’s messages and calls. I also don’t dare to leave the house,” the mother shared.
She added that at their age, if the children go to school far from home, their families will worry about the temptations out there and expressed hope that the authorities can open more classes or have some plan for the children to study at schools near home.
Grandma continues to submit appeal for her grandchild.
Ms. Nguyen Thi S. (65 years old, residing in Binh Dinh commune, Kien Xuong district, Thai Binh) cried when she heard the news that her grandson, male student D. D. T., had previously passed the entrance exam to Binh Thanh High School, but after the inspection, T. went from passing to failing.
Ms. S. sadly shared the difficult situation of candidate T., whose father works in Ho Chi Minh City and whose mother is receiving medical treatment in her hometown, so T has to live with her grandmother.
“From morning until now, when he found out he failed, he cried a lot and refused to eat or drink anything. I feel sorry for him, all his hopes and expectations were put into this exam,” said Mrs. S.
Ms. S. added that after taking the exam, T. re-graded the test and estimated that it was about 26.4 points, the same as the score the male student received the first time. But unexpectedly, after the inspection, T.’s score was reduced by 2 points. The admission score to Binh Thanh High School (Kien Xuong District) was 25.6 points, T. went from having enough points to pass to now being a failed candidate.
“According to the school’s announcement, the school will hold a parent-teacher meeting on August 29. I will attend the meeting and pay for textbooks for my child. My child has also come to school to receive his homeroom teacher. I am very happy because he gets to study near home. I had so many wishes, but now they are all gone, there is nothing left…”, Mrs. S. cried.

On the afternoon of August 20, in the hot and humid weather, this woman put on her hat and went to Binh Thanh High School to submit an application to review her grandchild’s exam scores, but was told that today, August 21, was the day the school started accepting applications for review, so she went home.
The child of Ms. Nguyen Thi D. (49 years old, residing in Tien Hai District) who wishes to take the exam for the Thai Binh specialized school is one of the candidates who submitted a request for re-examination after the 10th grade entrance exam but the result did not change. Specifically, Ms. D. said that after the exam, her child was scored confidently that he had done the test, but the result returned that he was 1 point short of the math major. When Ms. D. submitted the request for re-examination, Thai Binh province also began an inspection.
Morning of August 21, Ms. D. said that after the official scores were announced, her child was still 0.25 points short of passing the math exam, but neither the candidate nor her family were upset because they believed the results accurately reflected the student’s ability.
“Studying math will mean being far from home, so I let my child study at Tay Tien Hai High School to be closer to his family. He is also happy with his new choice,” Ms. D. added.
At a press conference on August 20, the Thai Binh Department of Education and Training said it is urgently taking measures to correct errors so that the new school year can take place on schedule, while also directing educational institutions to maximize students’ right to go to school, in accordance with their wishes and abilities.
Candidates who “pass but fail” can register for admission to private high schools and vocational education and continuing education centers of districts/cities according to their wishes, registering for admission on the Primary Admission System from August 24 to 5:00 p.m. on August 27.
The Department also directed educational institutions to coordinate with authorities at all levels, organizations, and unions to meet with students who were previously recognized as successful but now failed to pass the exam to do ideological work, encourage and guide districts, cities, and vocational schools in the province if needed to ensure that all students have the right to go to school.
