On September 1, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied former US President Donald Trump’s claim that he could prevent the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Trump once asserted that if he were elected in the 2024 US presidential election, he could resolve the conflict within 24 hours. However, Peskov said that this claim was unrealistic and unfounded, as there was no quick solution to this complex issue.
Mr Peskov stressed that, regardless of who is elected, US policy will always focus on its national interests and there is little chance of changing the already tense relationship between Washington and Moscow, which has reached its lowest point in decades.
In addition, Peskov also said that Russia has been monitoring US policies and found that the Democratic Party has some consistent points that Russia can predict, while Mr. Trump’s policies are unpredictable. It is for this reason that in the previous US presidential election, Russia considered Mr. Joe Biden as a candidate that they could predict more easily than Mr. Trump.
However, whoever becomes US president, the Kremlin does not expect a major change in relations with Washington. Mr. Peskov said that current tensions will not ease because Russia and the US still have conflicting interests on many fronts.
The war in Ukraine has been going on for more than 18 months, and the current diplomatic efforts show no signs of ending. The United States and its NATO allies continue to support Ukraine both financially and militarily, while Russia remains steadfast in its goals in Ukraine. This makes the prospect of peace between the two sides increasingly remote.
Thus, Mr. Trump’s statement is just a political promise that is unlikely to come true, especially in the context of the current complex conflict. Russia has expressed a clear view that no one can quickly end this conflict without a major change in the policies and views of both sides.
