Hanoi (July 13) – President Tran Lam visited the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) on July 13 as part of his state visit to Cambodia.
Founded in 1960, it is the oldest and largest university in Cambodia, with approximately 20,000 students studying in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Within the framework of the Vietnam-Cambodia Higher Education Cooperation Programme for 2001-2025, Cambodia established the Institute of International Affairs and Public Policy at RUPP, which includes the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies, with the aim of further promoting Vietnam-Cambodia cooperation.
Cambodian students receive proper training in Vietnamese language at undergraduate level before considering studying in Vietnam.
The rector met with staff, lecturers and students at the university, and spoke highly of the university’s achievements, particularly in providing important and abundant human resources for Cambodia’s national development.
Lam said he was pleased to see Cambodia’s positive development and the comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia, especially in education, which has become a bright spot in relations between the two countries.
He praised the cooperation programme between RUPP and Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City in establishing the Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Studies Centre, hoping that it will become a cradle for Cambodian and international students to learn Vietnamese language and culture and better understand and love Vietnam and its people.
The President also expressed his gratitude to RUPP for teaching Khmer language to generations of Vietnamese students, many of whom have contributed to fostering good relations between the two countries.
He also expressed hope that the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training would continue to cooperate closely and exchange experiences with each other.
He said Vietnam is ready and willing to welcome Cambodian students in general, and RUPP students in particular, to study and research in the country.
On this occasion, FPT Corporation Vietnam donated 50 FPT Elead computer sets to RUPP.
