Here, the Chinese leader stressed that countries around the world need to unite in a context of many changes.
“In this turbulent and volatile world, countries need unity and coordination instead of division or confrontation. People want openness and progress, not exclusion or regression,” Mr. Xi said.
He also reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to bilateral relations: “Although major changes have taken place in the respective conditions of the two countries and in China-US relations, China’s commitment to the stable, healthy and sustainable development of China-US relations remains unchanged.”
On the US side, Mr. Sullivan affirmed that Washington is committed to managing the US-China relationship to ensure that tensions do not escalate.
“President Biden is committed to responsibly managing this consequential relationship to ensure competition does not spill over into conflict or confrontation, and to cooperation when our interests align,” Sullivan said.
“We are committed to maintaining high-level diplomacy and President Biden looks forward to continuing to work with you in the weeks ahead,” Mr. Sullivan added.
This week’s talks covered a range of issues that complicate relations between the countries.
Sullivan’s agenda includes tensions over Taiwan, the South China Sea and Russia. Washington also asked China for more help to stem the flow of fentanyl, the leading cause of overdoses in the United States.
