On the afternoon of October 27, Storm No. 6 (international name Storm Tra Mi) weakened into a tropical depression after making landfall in the provinces of Thua Thien – Hue, Quang Nam and Da Nang city. Although the intensity has decreased, the storm still causes strong winds and heavy rain, increasing the risk of inundation and flooding in the central region.
According to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, storm No. 6 brought strong winds in many places. On Con Co Island (Quang Tri), wind gusts reached level 9, while on Cu Lao Cham (Quang Nam) and Nam Dong (Thua Thien – Hue), strong wind gusts reached level 10. At 4 p.m., the tropical depression’s center was located at about 15.9 degrees North latitude and 107.9 degrees East longitude, in the provinces of Thua Thien – Hue, Quang Nam, and Da Nang. This low pressure system moves in the south-west direction at a speed of about 5 km/h, maintaining strong winds of level 7 (50 – 61 km/h), with gusts of level 9. The area from Da Nang to Quang Ngai and Kon Tum is expected to have heavy rain from 70 – 150 mm, in some places it can reach over 200 mm. The risk of localized rain with high intensity (over 100 mm in 3 hours) is also warned.
Heavy rainfall has caused water levels on rivers to rise, causing the risk of flooding in many localities. This afternoon, the water level of Kien Giang River (Quang Binh) has exceeded alert level 3, rivers in Quang Tri and Thua Thien – Hue are also at alert level 2 – 3, some places even exceed alert level 3, such as Perfume River.
Mr. Phung Tien Dung, Head of the Hydrological Forecasting Department, said districts such as Le Thuy, Quang Ninh, Dong Hoi (Quang Binh); Trieu Phong, Hai Lang, Gio Linh, Dong Ha, Quang Tri (Quang Tri); and Phu Loc, Phu Vang, Huong Tra, Hue city (Thua Thien – Hue) were flooded due to heavy rain and rapidly rising river water levels. Mr. Dung warned that in the next 12 hours, flood water levels on rivers in southern Quang Binh, especially Thach Han River, will continue to rise, exceeding alert level 3.
