Below is the most accurate prayer for the 7th lunar month.
What day is the offering to pardon the dead?
Today is the 2nd day of the 7th lunar month, according to custom, people can start offering sacrifices to the deceased.
According to folk beliefs, the seventh lunar month of each year is the time when the gates of Hell open, granting amnesty to the dead. Prisoners in Hell have the opportunity to be pardoned and released to a peaceful realm.
That is why this month often has a ceremony to worship the wandering souls who have no home, no place to stay, no incense, no relatives in the world to help them not starve, and not disturb the living.
According to folk beliefs, the 15th day of the 7th lunar month or the 15th day of the 7th lunar month is considered the day of pardon for the deceased. However, according to Vietnamese folk customs, after the 15th day of the 7th lunar month, the dead will no longer be able to receive offerings, so the ceremony of pardoning the deceased can begin from the 2nd day of the 7th lunar month until before 12 noon on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month.
The ceremony to absolve the dead usually takes place in the evening because people believe that the souls returning from the underworld will be weak and unable to withstand the sunlight, so they cannot enjoy the offerings.

Notes when offering alms to the deceased
In addition to preparing the offerings and prayers properly, the homeowner’s family needs to pay attention to what to avoid on the day of pardoning the deceased:
– The ceremony should be held during the day instead of at night, when the sun has set because at that time, the gates of hell will officially close.
– Do not offer salty food, because it can easily cause the spirit to become greedy, cling to the world, and cause trouble for the homeowner.
– Worship should be held outdoors, preferably in front of the house.
– When sprinkling rice and salt, you should also sprinkle them on the sidewalk to avoid attracting evil spirits into the house.
– Make offerings to living beings before making offerings to ancestors so that their souls do not consume their belongings.
– After the offering, you should distribute it, do not leave it in the house because it can easily bring bad luck.
